Tradition, tradition, tradition!

As an African, culture and tradition is a very big deal! For example, in a country like Nigeria where we have three different tribes - Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo.

Every tribe sees their culture as the commandment every one that hails from it should obey.

There's a saying that says 'One man's food is another man's poison'. This is so true in all of these different cultures! So anyone born to parents from these tribes and refuses to continue or follow the arithmetic of their parents culture; the person is said to be unmannered!!!

One sees this manifested especially in the Yoruba tribe!!! Once you hold a different opinion or dare to question the tradition, you are stigmatised!

How far has your tradition helped you to become a better person? Remember, there are good and bad things to emulate in every tradition. So my advice is

Before you continue to carry on a tradition- THINK!

In marriage, culture and tradition has saved and destroyed so many lives! Our parents that chose to follow them were not truly happy people! For example, a married woman is supposed to be a slave to everyone e.g. In-laws, husband, friends etc. she is supposed to get it all together as if she is a superwoman. Even in the case of domestic abuse, she is supposed to stay in there and pray that the man changes! Also, when there's adultery and in some cases; it's a normal occurrence to expect the Men to cheat and so the woman is conditioned to take it all in and live with it! Why? Because they are men!!! Really???

Some of these women do not make it out of their marriages alive! In some tradition, marriage is the ultimate thing that even most women sacrifice their dignity, happiness, wholeness and the very essence of who they are, only because they are married!!! This is sad!!!

This tradition is silent but yet very loud even as it's been passed on to our children and unborn generations!!! My take on all of this is -

'Treat everyone as you would want to be treated'

Please people from Africa, think very well and renew your minds because your life is not given to you so that you can imprison a certain gender by having unrealistic expectations. Parents teach your children, be it boy or girl, to be responsible human beings be it from the kitchen, living room to the world!!! That is the only hope we have for the future!!!
