Why was there so much violence in the Old Testament of the bible?

Hello people, I have a pressing question in my heart and here it is:

Why was there so much violence in the Old Testament of the bible? Most of it is claimed to be backed up by God because God wants his people to be victorious. For example the children of Israelites would go into a city or town killing children, men, women and livestock all in the name of possessing the land?
Below are some scriptures that illustrate this point:

When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it. They completely destroyed everything in it with their swords—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, goats, and donkeys.
(Joshua 6:20-21 NLT)

This was when the walls of Jericho was destroyed so that the Israelite could possess the land. When these chapters are studied in churches, almost no one talks about why people have to be killed so that a land could be possessed but we all claim that every wall of Jericho in our lives must be destroyed!

And Israel killed King Og, his sons, and all his subjects; not a single survivor remained. Then Israel occupied their land.
(Numbers 21:35 NLT)

Israel killed king Og because he refused to let them travel through their land. If this were to happen in our current dispensation, one would say they were terrorist!

So Moses ordered Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death the men under your authority who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”
(Numbers 25:5 NLT)

This shows there was no freedom of choice of religion!

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Attack the Midianites and destroy them, because they assaulted you with deceit and tricked you into worshiping Baal of Peor, and because of Cozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, who was killed at the time of the plague because of what happened at Peor.”
(Numbers 25:16-18 NLT)

It really baffles me when I read these verses during my bible study. How can God allow people to be destroyed because he wants a set of people to possess a land? And God gave a commandment to the people through Moses that 'thou shall not kill'!

I guess there's so much more for me to learn about God!

So why was there so much violence supported by God in the Old Testament because right now a lot criticise terrorists like Boko Haram, ISIS,  that destroy things and people all in the name of religion? I really need an answer to this question! All comments are welcome. Please make comments below on the blog for the benefit of other readers! Thanks
